Whenever the name “Sutherland Sisters” is mentioned, eyebrows are usually raised as people are always eager to hear more about the famous sisters who perhaps define the term “eccentric.” This famous family of seven singing siblings, each with floor length hair, became a sensation at the end of the 19th century, but interest in their rags-to-riches-to-rags story continues even today. Family patriarch, Fletcher Sutherland, exploited his daughters’ singing abilities and their beautiful hair as a way to earn a family fortune. The cash continued to flow when he started to market a brand of “hair-tonic” he named after his seven famous daughters. Seven Sutherland Sisters hair products were an instant sensation and were sold around the world. Millions were made, but sadly, even more was spent.
